The following are some common and frequently asked questions often fielded by our educators, which may be categorized by Payment, Policies, Program and Services. We recognize that, due to the straightforwardness of the questions and responses detailed below, they may not be specific enough to your personal inquiry. Does my tuition change any particular month because of Vacations or Holidays? No, your tuition is based on thirty-seven weeks of afterschool child care.

Does WASC accept credit cards? No, acceptable payments may be made out to WASC in the form of personal check, money order or cash.

Does WASC accept vouchers? No.

Does WASC bill me every month? No, we invoice all families once at the beginning of the year with a tuition payment plan set up for the duration of the school year which is catered to your child's schedule of enrollment. A total of ten (10) payments are due on the 25th of each month, starting on May 25th, August 25th and following each month thereafter to April 25th.

Does WASC have any financial assistance? No, we are a parent operated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit child care provider and we operate solely on program tuition.

How is my payment policy affected if my child starts WASC after the school year has started? Your tuition payment plan is established and prorated, due on the 25th of the month which your child starts attending our program until June 25th of that year.

What is the WASC corporate Tax ID Number? Our EIN is 03-0440927.


Can my child eat peanut butter at WASC? Yes, but we will take extra precautions to ensure there is no food contamination exposure to those who may have life threatening allergies.

Can my child walk home alone from WASC? Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care permits us to allow children who are not less than nine years old with a written permission slip, signed by the child's legal guardians, on file to leave by themselves.

Does WASC perform any fundraising events specific to the program? No.

Does WASC serve peanut products? No, we read all labels as well as having parents verify all foods prior to their child receiving them.

How do I change my child's schedule? You must put all relative information in a letter to the Program Director. The Program Director will then contact you about the availability to meet your new schedule requests.

How do I register my child into WASC? We start the registration process in March for families currently enrolled in our program, and in April for new families on a first-come first-served basis.

What do I do if my child is absent from school? You need to contact us and inform us if your child will not be attending on the child's registered day.

What if my child has special circumstances? You must inform the Program Director about the "special circumstances" to discuss the matter for further action, and we will work with you to discuss a plan to meet the needs of the child.

What if my child's documentation is not complete? Your child cannot attend WASC until "all" paperwork is completed and signed.

What should I do if I am going to be late picking up my child? You must call WASC and inform us to your tardiness, which you will be assessed a Late Fee upon arrival.

Who is responsible for my child while attending a WASC special activity and/or field trip? The WASC educator who is assigned to the specific special activity and/or field trip is ultimately responsible; so your child is always supervised by WASC.

Why does WASC seem to have so many Policies & Procedures? Most of our Policies & Procedures are mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. The added Policies & Procedures are implemented for the protection of the WASC educators and children of the WASC program.


Do WASC educators belong to any professional organizations? Yes, our educators belong to the National AfterSchool Association and the Newton After School Association.

How old is WASC? We were founded in 2002.

Is WASC located in the Williams Elementary School? Yes, we are located on the first floor of the Williams Elementary School. We also utilize the Art Room, Auditorium, Cafeteria, Library, Gymnasium, Outside Field and Playground.

Is WASC part of the Newton Public School System? No, we are a parent operated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit child care provider and share a wonderful working relationship with the public school system.

Is WASC open on December Vacation Week? No.

Is WASC open on February & April Vacation Weeks? We will open if there is significant interest amongst the families of our program. If we open, the day runs from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM Tuesday to Friday. Families who sign up for this added daycare curriculum are assessed additional costs to cover expenses for each individual week.

Is WASC open on School Holidays? No, we operate in accordance to the school calendar. WASC is closed when the Newton Public Schools are closed.

Is WASC open on Snow Days? No. WASC is closed when the Newton Public Schools are closed.

When can I talk to someone at WASC? Our educators are on-site from 11:30 AM to 6:00 PM weekdays. You can call us via our main phone line at 617-527-8444. If an educator happens to be fielding another phone call at that time, please leave a voice-mail and we will make every effort to contact you as soon as possible in reply to your inquiry.

When does WASC operate? We open on the first day of the school year and close on the last day of the school year, as a ten month program.

Who are the Board of Directors? Our Board of Directors are current parents with children at WASC, as well as two of the Founding Parents of WASC who act as community liaisons within the Board.

Who licenses WASC? We are licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, 1250 Hancock Street, Suite 120-S, Quincy, MA 02169, in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 28A of the General laws, and regulations established by such.


Can my child do Homework at WASC? Yes, your child can do Homework at anytime during the day. From 5:00 PM to 5:45 PM each day, we have a structured Homework Session with an educator available to assist the children with any questions.

Can my child use the school computers while attending WASC? No, we do not use the city of Newton public school equipment.

Can WASC educators babysit outside of normal business operating hours? No.

Does WASC offer any special activities? Yes, we offer extracurricular programs, such as field trips and special instruction events, which are offered at an added cost to cover the specific expenses associated with each activity.

Does WASC provide food for my child? Yes, we serve a healthy snack for every child everyday. We also have Belmont Springs Water available at all times.

Does WASC serve School Lunch on Tuesdays and Early Release Days? No.

If my child is a Kindergartener, can my child come to WASC until 3:00 PM? Yes, we have a wonderful Kindergarten Program which operates on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM each day.

If my child is an incoming Kindergartener, how does WASC Accommodate the September Kindergarten Schedule? Your child can attend WASC extra hours during the month of September for an additional fee.

Is WASC affiliated with the Newton Community Education classes? No.

Is WASC open during the summer? No, our afterschool child care license allows us to operate during the school year. Although we do not specifically endorse any program outside of WASC, you may contact the City of Newton Parks & Recreation Department, the City of Newton Community Education and/or the City of Newton Community Service Center for available local services during summer time hours.

What happens on the MCAS switch days? We expect to see your child on the scheduled days of attendance. We will try to accommodate any additional needs if our ratios of educator-to-child allows.

What if my child has medications which may need to be given at WASC? You must inform the Program Director of any medical needs and supply us with all necessary up-to-date prescriptions, along with your child's written doctor's orders. You and the Program Director will coordinate and establish a personalized health plan for the benefit of your child.

What will my child do at WASC? We offer a variety of daily core activities for each child to partake in, stemming from Art, Book Club, Drama, Free Play, Homework Session, Structured Fit Fun Time. Additional extracurricular programs, such as field trips and special instruction events, are offered at an added cost to cover the specific expenses associated with each activity.

Why should my child attend WASC? Every child and family is different, and requires diverse care. We excel in meeting the needs of every child and every family.
